Today we are going to talk about a principle called Doffense. It’s both defense and offense it’s one and the same. It’s basically, you wanna learn how to attack the opponent while defending and have your defense while attacking.
The concept of doffense is you don’t want to learn how to block someone or stop someone. That’s not your mentality, the mentality is to hit them while having your defense. You don’t want to put your mindset to defend him first and then get the attack after.
If you do that you loose the ability to attack. So even if you successfully defend against someone your attacking will loose because you are receiving a lot of energy trying to stop that energy. Our goal is we want to learn to create a powerful attack with having a guard but not necessarily having to block.
And what I mean by that is as a person punches you want to find your way in not force your way in. The best technique is learning how to move your body, so you know I always like to say “a bullet is only dangerous if you are in it’s path”.
So the best thing to do is to move out of the way. So if he punches you his punch is like a bullet the best thing to do is just dodge. At the same time not only are you learning to avoid taking the punch but also it takes less effort to defend. As opposed to standing in one spot that can end up hurting me if I am putting a lot of energy trying to stop it.

Technically speaking, if his strike is powerful and I am not as powerful deflecting his strike while standing in front of him and I make an error I can get hit. If however I am moving while deflecting and I make an error I can at least avoid the punch.
That’s one of the things that gives you an advantage is to learn to move while deflecting instead of just standing there and deflecting. We want to learn to get the angle while the person is attacking.
So as he punches I want to move out, but I also wanna have that line to attack. So my focus even though I move out isn’t about getting away from the punch. It’s about moving into a punch. So as he is punching me, notice my drive isn’t to get away it’s to get to the attack.
So although I cut my angle, my mindset is not to avoid the punch, my mindset is to clear the path so I can get the attack. I don’t want any obstruction or obtrusion that’s going to prevent me from getting a good attack.
So if he is punching me I might have a hard time attacking because I get the feedback from the parry cause I was to busy trying to stop the punch. So I would rather you learn how to move out of the way, have your guard okay.
But I don’t go out of my way to make contact with the hand. If I can, I can just throw my punch and have my guard up at the same time. I have my guard up just as a precaution in case he blocks or punches… You can get the rest of the this lesson by joining Enter Shaolin HERE
