I like your conversation, in my opinion it is important not make a religion out of kung-fu, many people trying to do so, and they create this crazy misconception about martial arts. Kung-fu is martial art, it has a philosophy of life and brings a lot of positive influence upon human life -like healthier body, sober mind, light spirit…but it is not a religion.
In martial arts there are a lot of good and positive values which are similar with many religious values, where harmony of coexistence can be found, but still should not be mixed, martial art is a martial art and religion is a religion…
The difference is, that martial art is a philosophy about existence and survival in this life, religion is about reaching towards existence beyond this earthly life, with many good teachings about this life as well, but still it is different in this aspect…
Sifu Larry Rivera says
Hi Witalis, I agree religion and kung fu are certainly 2 different things. With that said, I think it’s important for a martial artist to be of high moral character.
Witalis S says
Yes, high moral character applies also to religious person…it is a result of personal struggle for self improvement…

Interesting discussion on Chi, Hypnosis, awareness of energy etc… As a researcher into historical philosophy, I’ve come across a centuries-old Western European concept that is very close to the ancient oriental idea of Chi. In the West, it was called Pneuma. It was described as the mystical breath, and it had three principal manifestations. It was seen as the ‘breath of life’, something ineffable that connects us to something sacred, spiritual, more profound than our everyday experience. It was also a network of energy connecting the mind/body holism and giving us proprioception, health and vigour. Thirdly, it was an energy that could communicate between one person and another, for example when a singer or musician influences their audience through their performance. As late as the 17th century, this Pneuma was the accepted theoretical model in historical medical science, and was not thought to conflict with Christian doctrine. It seems to me that one or other of those forms of Pneuma would match with the particular examples of Chi, energy, awareness etc that you were discussing.
And as a qualified hypnotist, I’d like to reassure Sifu Larry about his understandable reluctance to “have his mind reprogrammed by someone else”. Letting another person hypnotise is an act of trust, similar to putting yourself in the hands of a medical doctor whilst under anaesthetic. Not everyone wants to go there… But – happily – there is an alternative. It’s easy to learn to hypnotise yourself, and then you can give your mind an “update” whenever you want, and for whatever purpose you choose. Essentially, you get yourself into a relaxed, focussed and receptive state of mind, and then offer yourself some positive suggestions.
And – connecting up those two comments – isn’t that what we do in Tai Chi, for example when we prepare for a lesson with our teacher by doing Qi Gong first? All that relaxation and focus on the breath links up our whole being (mind/body/spirit) and puts us into a receptive state, in which the teacher’s positive suggestions will be maximally beneficial.
As you both commented, all these energies (and the particular awareness for each energy, both “force” and “feel” as Sifu Phu might say) can be used for good or for bad. That’s a moral choice for each individual to make. So we have to learn how and when to trust ourselves, our training partners, our teachers. Otherwise, you guys wouldn’t be able to do that bone-conditioning you were working on, for example.
Meanwhile, thanks for trusting us, your video audience, enough to discuss such personal questions with us.
Have a good weekend! Andrew

Hi Andrew thanks for commenting! I’ve never heard about Pneuma before I love learning something new 🙂
As far as being hypnotized, I’ve heard about self hypnosis before. I haven’t tried that but it’s on my list of things to check out. Thanks again for commenting.

Something is off… The link to the free training says it’s about the muk jong but it’s a video on finger locking someone who is pointing or pushing you.

We haven’t released this weeks updates yet. However in the free training section we put a new video up every week. So that our intro members can see what type of lessons are in our training vault.
