Sifu’s Corner | What Clothing To Wear When Training For Combat

May 11, 2014 By Enter Shaolin 16 Comments

sifus corner what to wear when trainingIn this video Sifu answers a question from our third video lesson in our 5 day Ngo Dac Na Video course.

Steve Asked: I just want to ask why you wear long sleeves instead of shirt sleeves traditionally used in situations of sensitivity drills?

Personally I’d have to say Sifu has been wearing long sleeve hoodies as long as I have known him… Even on days where you would think it’s to hot for long sleeve hoodies.

Depending on what you do for a living you could be wearing work boots with steel toe tips in them. If that’s the case, there are certain techniques you can do that you wouldn’t normally be able to do with sneakers on.

So I agree with Sifu, if your training for combat (street fighting situations) it’s a good a idea to train in clothing that you are normally in.

Another good example is women who wear high heels… If she wears them on a regular basis, then she should train in high heels. Because it’s likely, if she ever runs into a situation she needs to defend herself… She more than likely would be in heels and thus should be prepared.

I am not suggesting that you shouldn’t train in appropriate training attire. I am just saying whatever clothing you normally wear on a regular basis, it’s a good idea to do some training in those clothes.

Talk to you soon!

– Larry Rivera

Now it’s your turn…

What type of clothing do you wear when you are training?

What type of clothing do you wear when you are training?

    Nothing…

Ahum.. I mean nothing should be the cause or factor that will affect your performance.
So a good martial artist should be able to perform just as well in any clothing or in any circumstances, it’s just how you make things go towards your intentions I believe.

So it makes perfect sense to train in your daily clothing to prepare for your daily self defense or combat needs.
And of course sporting and competition situations will be different.
So like Sifu said, wear different clothing for different training purposes.

But I still want to point out that in most of the Enter Shaolin videos, I see both Sifu and Larry, and sometimes others wearing the same type of hoodie with the logo and catch phrases on… lol
(Apparently Sifu’s influences go beyond martial arts XD)

LMBO Danny! Those hoodies you have seen Sifu, Larry and a few others wearing are special ones Sifu had made up for his students to purchase. Larry is very much a sweats and hoodie guy something him and Sifu definitely have in common.

We plan on having Enter Shaolin gear (clothes) available in the near future. And yes… Hoodies will be one of the options, in case you were wondering. 😉

Congratulations Maryann on returning to your training! Looking forward to hearing more soon. 🙂

Yes, an interesting observation regards to the question of Sifu’s attire whilst teaching us all. However, if one was to look into the past teachings, I.E entertaichi.com. Then everyone can clearly see that Sifu has indeed literally been there, done that and worn the T-Shirt l.o.l.

    Dear Sifu,

Is it possible to obtain a recording of your intro and outro (Chinese/oriental) soothing music track? I really enjoy listening to that aspect of each and every video that you do. I would really like to be able to listen to that music whilst training for as long as the track lasts and then just program it on a loop system, so that I can listen for hours and hours on end…to help with my training and and day dreaming etc.

Hey Bobby, unfortunately we are unable to provide you with our music as it is copyrighted for our commercial use only. However, I highly suggest looking on YouTube for music by searching for ‘tai chi music’. You can find some great long videos to practice to, generally 45 minutes or longer.

    Dear Sifu,

It would be awesome if you could create an online student ( video gallery/submission) consultation service whereby we the student could submit a short video of us doing the training drills/techniques etc and subsequently asking/showing you if it looks and sounds right etc…and then for you to reply back with a video and make your expert observation and guidance etc…please let me know what you think about this idea?

    Big Respect!

Hey Bobby! The good news is we have already planned on having this feature available as we agree, that it would be a beneficial feature.

However… We are still working on figuring out the best way to implement it.

      We will keep you posted!

      Thanks for commenting. 🙂

      Dear Jamie,

Yes, I understand. However, there could be an opportunity whereby you could produce and distribute around the world and make some money from sales of a iTunes sound track? Just a thought, because I would certainly buy. It all depends of whom is actually the copyright holder I suppose. Thank you.

Unfortunately not, as it is something we bought for commercial use and we do not own the resale rights.

One day we do want to have custom music created for our videos and to be able to provide you all with a soundtrack. However, we are not quite there yet.

I will be writing a post later this week sharing some of our favorite music to practice and meditate to.

    Dear Jamie,

    Thanks for your “Kung fu”

Just wondering, are yourself and Larry involved in the IM industry too?

      Thank you Bobby!

Yes, Larry and I have been working together in the online marketing field since 2009. I’ve actually been begging him since 2009 when I lived in NC, to get him and Sifu Phu to share their awesome knowledge online as I was unable to find a good place locally to learn/train. I eventually relocated to Ohio and ran into the same issue which is one of the reasons I relocated to NJ last Summer. Me making the move here is also one of the reasons Enter Shaolin is now available to all.

Having all three of us together in person brought the right synergy to turn a dream into a reality. 🙂

Enter Shaolin is our main focus, we loved online marketing, however it always felt empty because we could not find a way to market our passion online in the past. Thankfully, those days are over!

Hope that answered your question. 🙂

Hey Farah, do you mean a belt system or rank system? If so then no as that is not traditional and more of a money scheme.

We do have quizzes on some of our courses like the Ngo Dac Na 101 course to test what you have learned.

The only other testing we have is for those that one to be certified to teach Ngo Dac Na.

Let us know if you have any questions, Farah. Also, we have a BIG sale going on that ends on the 31st, check it out here: https://entershaolin.com/birthday
