I too am learning Kung Fu as an adult and I’m not the only one who has wondered… Where do I start?
Kris wanted to know on Lesson 5: Dealing With Motions of our free Ngo Dac Na Kung Fu course here…
What does Sifu Phu recommend for someone 40+ years old, who is just getting started in Wing Chun?
We have many Enter Shaolin members and those seeking to start learning Kung Fu online, who are just getting started in their Kung Fu training as an adult.
I am 32 and while I got some lessons right before my 31st birthday, my official training just started this year! And we have Kris and others in their 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and beyond who are just getting started too.
So, the best time and place to get started is right here, right now.
It’s better late than never as the saying goes and there is never going to be a more perfect time, than right now. 😉
What’s great about the layout of Enter Shaolin is we geared it for any skill level and age. We have the site set up similar to a course curriculum broken down into subjects and lessons. Start from the beginning and work your way through each subject and course or not, the choice is always yours!
From Wing Chun, Tai Chi, Chin Na, Qigong, C.O.R.E. Training, Ngo Dac Na, etc… Everything is broken down piece by piece. So you can start where you want and work on what you want, when you want! And you can go back and rewatch the lessons to fine tune your skills as much as you want!
Tip: A beginner should start with the first lesson in each section and work their way through each lesson as they master it.
Here is what Sifu Phu has to say about learning Kung Fu as an adult:
Did you catch that!? One of Sifu Phu’s masters did not start learning Kung Fu until they were in their mid 40’s! What does that mean? It means no matter what age you start your Kung Fu training…
It’s never too late for you to become a master! All it takes is desire, commitment and persistence to get started right now.
Blessings to you and yours,
Jamie Pelaez
P.S. What age did you start learning Kung Fu? And if you are still sitting on the fence and have not started yet, what are you waiting for?

I can understand why starting kung fu later life may seem too late but I am in my late 50’s and have gained so much knowledge about proper body mechanics and controlling ones energy since following Sifu over the years that I can see how it doesn’t matter what age you start. I am enjoying being a member of Enter Shaolin. I am currently working on the Tai Chi form and although I am not satisfied with my movements yet I will keep working on it until I am. Thanks for a great training program!
Jamie Pelaez says
Hey Mark! Thank you for sharing a bit of your story and journey. You are another proof it is never too late to get started.
How did it feel to you when you realized you had been moving wrong probably all your life? I was a wee bit frustrated, however I realized I wasn’t alone and it is truly an epidemic here in the West. My goal is to help people break free of this body bondage that has been going on way too long.
It’s hard starting learn to move all over again, however it is totally worth it!
Have a blessed day Mark!

Sifu Phu, I’ve been curious. Does Ngo Dac Na have an English translation?
Love your videos. Your way of explaining things is the best I’ve seen. As a fellow Brother in Christ, I believe I was directed towards your YouTube channel one day when I was thinking: instead of continuing practicing Jeet Kune Do, go back to its roots in Wing Chun. Two other channels were good but once I found yours I was addicted.
Jamie Pelaez says
Hey Jacob! I was just sending this blog post to another comment and seen your comment was never replied to.
We did a Sifu’s Corner about this here: https://entershaolin.com/sifus-corner-what-does-ngo-dac-na-mean-in-english/
Blessings to you and yours!

One day I would like to teach Ngo Dac Na System when I retire ( in a couple of years), my question is “What lessons or classes would I have to take or acquire to be certified to teach the Ngo Dac Na System?
Would I have to visit your dojo to receive my certification?
Thanks A lot
Sifu Larry Rivera says
You need 48 hours of live training which could be a combination of seminars which are 16 hours each and or coming to train with us in person here in New Jersey. Ideally going through going through Ngo Dac Na 101 course to prepare you would be recommended and these are the pre- requisites to certification.
We will hold certification retreats which will have further training as well as testing for level 1 certification. We still have some availability for next week’s seminar if you are interested.

Thanks for this. I’m a 51 year old female that has been practising Qi Gong & Tai Chi for just 3 months now. I finally took the plunge (with a little push and encouragement from the teacher I have to admit!) to try my first Shaolin Kung Fu lesson last night. I absolutely loved it and came home buzzing with energy and enthusiasm to learn. However, a demon in my mind kept saying “you’re too old”, “what on earth are you doing”, “you’ll never be able to learn the movements, have the flexibility, strength, fitness”, bla bla bla. Your video there has encouraged me to continue and lay those demons to rest so thank you!

We are never to old to live life on our own terms.. So glad you enjoyed the article..
