Hi family, one of the reasons why we like to say Ngo Dac Na can be used with any martial art system is because it’s not the style that matters as much as it is the way that you use the energy.
I use to think that punching with a vertical fist mattered more than punching with a horizontal fist. The reason why that mattered to me was that I didn’t understand the energy behind the punch.
Understanding the Ngo Dac Na principles teaches YOU, how and why a punch is a punch is a punch. It’s why what we do is so versatile and effective.

I have seen fast hands over the years, but not seen any as fast as Sifu Phu’s. Great demonstration of speed and focus on target.
Sifu Larry Rivera says
Thanks Jim! Glad you enjoyed the lesson.

Many styles dictate through their advancement testing a particular punch. Horizontal is the one that was required in Tae Kwon Do (TKD) and early in an Okinawan style of karate I trained in. Wing Chun was the first system I trained in that the vertical punch was a part of. I believe that until one really has understanding, training and practicing, any punch to the head can be bad for the puncher. Breaking any part of the hand in a self-defense situation can turn the puncher into a one hand fighter. I don’t remember palm heel strikes being in many of the different styles I have seen. Again any strike above the neck area I would recommend especially to beginners the use of palm strikes. The way I demonstrate this is to hit a concrete pillar as hard as I can with a palm heel strike and ask the puncher to do the same with a punch. Few if any have taken that challenge.

Relaxation, brings Speed and Speed brings Power. Subtle, but very true. Not just in martial arts, but in a lot of sports.
