Hey family! I hope everyone is doing well.
Sije Jamie encouraged me to share some new training with you today.
You may have heard us in previous webinars say that you can practice some of your sensitivity with your pet, especially if you have a pet dog.
If you have a cat you might be able to do some similar training, though that depends on the cat’s personality for sure as they tend to have a mind of their own.
Dogs can make create training partners to fill in the gaps some when you do not have another human to train with.

They provide energy and can mirror your energy. They can provide some resistance and challenges for you to work on. And you can play, exercise and train them as well as yourself in the process. It is a win-win.
BTW, Sije Jamie ended up getting Benny back in Florida on her last trip back home late November. He was supposed to be her dad’s when they rescued him, but he realized Benny was going to be a bit too much for him to deal with especially with his other dog Lulu at that time.
It just so happens Enter Shaolin was looking to rescue a dog, though not a puppy… But as Cesar Milan, The Dog Whisperer says…
You don’t always get the dog you want, but you get the dog that you need.”
– Cesar Millan
And here is how much Benny has grown for some perspective for you.
Watch the video below to see what Sije Jamie filmed earlier today.
WATCH: Kung Fu Dog Training AKA Sensitivity Training
We have been thinking about doing some more videos on training with our pets to help people think outside the box to provide some live energy and sensitivity training.
Is this something you would be interested in watching? Let us know in the comments section below.
There are many benefits to be had by training with your pet dog. We like watching the Dog Whisper with Cesar Millan. He talks a lot about being a good pack leader he also talks about projecting your energy.
Something we also do here at Enter Shaolin. I just thought it was neat that even working with your pet, your energy plays a roll it.
Sensitivity Training with your Dog Benefits:
- Cardio
- Stamina
- Strength
- Coordination
- Balance
- Pressure Control
- 3 P.R.O.O.F
- the 3 C’s (Connect, Conform, Control)
- P.O.C.K.E.T.
Those are a few of things you can work on developing further. So if you find yourself in need of a training partner, you don’t have to look any further than man’s best friend. A dog!
And if you don’t own one yet, highly consider rescuing one.
Though you aren’t limited to just training with dogs. I imagine any sort of domesticated pet that is playful you can do train somethings with. In fact I have practiced with pets such as: Ferrets, Guinea Pigs, Raccoons, etc…
The point here is while pets aren’t the perfect training partner, it is a way to get some form of sensitivity training in. And I am a firm believer in any proper training is better than no training at all.
Personally, I like playing with dogs. They have lots of energy, are strong and they learn fast. That’s right, the more you spar and play around with your dog, the more they will learn how to counter-attack, and then you both end up training and learning from each other.
SO WHAT DID YOU THINK? Would you like us to film more videos about how to train Kung Fu with pets? Let us know in the comments section YAY or NAY…

I like alternative ways of training so please keep posting. I don’t have a training partner either so it is very helpful to watch a master illustrate how it is done.
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Loved it awesome video
Thanks!
Yay. I’ve been training with my dog since it was mentioned in one of the early instructional videos. It really helped with my balance and wrist control. I have a 60 lb husky/german shepherd mix and being able to control her on walks with just a small wrist motions is wonderful.
The other day she took off after a cat while I was distracted by my phone 🙁 and I rooted and swerved her back to me with a spiral wrist movement without thought. I was amazed by how easy it was and that it occurred so naturally.
Good Stuff! Thanks for sharing.
That’s very cool that you were able to handle that unexpected lunge from a big dog like that! I wish I’d had that knowledge years ago.
Ya he keeps us on our toes…
I really enjoyed this video. It is very creative and a practical way of thinking outside the box and I’m all for thinking outside the box, especially when it comes to sensitivity training. In fact, it brought a smile to face. Because, I used to do the same thing with my dog, who’s name was Jerry, named after the cartoon characters in Tom and Jerry, unfortunately, he is no longer with us. But he was a medium sized mongrel mix, but very strong and extremely agile and that was a bit of a challenge to me. By the time he was fully grown, I was well into my Martial Arts at this time and would use him as a training tool some times, because his energy/force was live and somewhat unpredictable to me, simply because of how he would move his body. It took me a while, but eventually, I soon learned to develop balance, timing, wrist control, speed and focus amongst other things and learned to move with him and not against him, his strength and agility wasn’t so much of an issue to me anymore. When I would do this with other people’s dogs, for example, (depending on the dog), using 3PROOF, P.O.C.K.E.T, P.A.D etc. I find it very relaxing and very therapeutic to be honest with you. Like humans, no two dogs move in quite the same way, hence, you have a difference in energies. It’s all good fun and at the same time, you’re learning to fine tune your energy/sensitivity and in this case, develop a stronger bond with your dog, if you have one. As you rightly say, it doesn’t have to be a dog. So yes, more please, respect.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Errol! 🙂
Sifu,
Good article and good video. I have a old dog that is very stubborn but it would be good to get her playing. Thank you very much for the information.
Take care,
Brian
