Kung Fu Techniques – Sometimes The Best Defense Is A Good Offense

August 11, 2015 By Sifu Larry Rivera 14 Comments

Here at Enter Shaolin we like to share a lot of our Kung Fu Techniques with you. In this video we are going to talk about a technique called skimming.

Using skimming techniques allows us to attack the attack so to speak. Rather than waiting for someone to attack, you can engage them as they are attacking you.

One of the ways to do this is through skimming. Basically skimming works the same way skipping rocks over a body of water works.

When you skim you want to bounce off of your opponents arm towards their face. To do this, you must create a slight torque with the drive. Just remember that you are not blocking, rather instead you as your opponent strikes, you should strike.

Watch the video to get all the details on this Kung Fu technique. 🙂

Give this training drill a try and let us know how it worked out for you. If you enjoyed this video, then you will love our other kung fu techniques we teach inside our members only area, to find out more click here.

Happy Training,

Sifu Larry Rivera

    Dear Sifu,
    Greetings.

Skimming is sure FAST, I’m having an awkward time with my left hand ( need more coordination I guess) my right side is better. Could you please show the skimming technique with a R/H fighter instead of a Lefty? For us newbies, demo-ing with a R/H – L/H fighter on all techniques would be beneficial. My Iron Master wing chun dummy showed up today, anxious to get it set up and practice my moves. Thanks for all you share!

    Best regards to all,

    Respectfully,

    DH

I’ll talk to Sifu Phu about doing that Darrell. It’s been my experience that if you train your weaker side, it will naturally increase your favored side. At the end of the day you want to be able to do the technique from both sides of your body.

I am naturally left handed, but you would never know it if we exchanged hands. When you start learning the Wing Chun forms they all start on the left side of the body. Maybe it was because the creators of the system where left handed, or maybe it’s done that way because most people favor their right hand. Either way over time you will become more ambidextrous.

The advantage of becoming ambidextrous gives you another option when you are attacking or defending against your opponent. Unskilled people tend to fight only with one side of their body at a time. That means the other side is completely dead from an energy standpoint. Because you practice your martial art from both sides of your body this gives you an advantage.

Also as you progress in skill, you will develop the ability to move your hands and body together. For example: Rather than doing a pak (slap) block then a dar (punch). You will be able to do the pak and dar together = Pak Dar with out the “and” 🙂

i really enjoy your videos. it is quite different from my ‘hard’ japanese style i did in the 70s. the ‘skimming’ is very cool. the movements in general are smooth and very convincing. thanks, sleeth
