If you are new to visiting us we do weekly webinars every week. On these webinars we answer your questions about Kung Fu Martial Arts. The actual question that was asked on this particular webinar was:
Is Hung Gar A Good Kung Fu Style To Learn ?
We actually get asked this question a lot in regards to many different styles of martial arts. The answer is there isn’t actually a good or bad kung fu style. There is however good and bad teachers.
When you are looking into joining a martial arts school it’s important you learn from someone who is more interested in teaching and passing their knowledge to you than you are learning from someone who is more motivated by money.
Just like learning anything else if you have good teachers that can keep you interested and engaged you are going to retain something. If your teachers are bad, you may forget what was being taught to you as soon as you are done the lesson. Or worse you may not ever understand the lesson that is being given.
Learning Hung Gar or any martial art is a matter of personal preference. If you find it’s a kung fu style you are attracted to, then you absolutely should train in it.
Here at Enter Shaolin we really only have 1 deciding factor when it comes to picking a kung fu school or any martial art school for that matter. That is, does the instructor need to use their strength to overcome you.
A good teacher will be able to use their technique effectively. A bad teacher is someone who has to rely on their muscle. The reason is simply this. If part of your training requires you to be stronger and your techniques only work because you are stronger, eventually you are going to come across someone who is stronger than you. Then what? This is why the focus of training has to be on developing skill that isn’t dependent on strength.
So the style you want to learn isn’t relevant. What is relevant is learning from someone who doesn’t rely on their muscles to win.

Difference between kung fu and jeet kune do ?
Sifu Larry Rivera says
Hi Michael, Jeet Kune Do is kung fu. A different flavor of Kung Fu , But Kung Fu all the same….
It has it’s roots in Kung Fu specifically Wing Chun. While there are other techniques from other styles Bruce Lee’s JKD was heavily influenced by Wing Chun.
In today’s world there are also JKD concepts that takes the principles and theories and applies it to their martial art.
