Are you looking for the best wing chun dummy? There are many different variations that you might feel overwhelmed with when deciding what you should buy. I would like to mention that there are a plethora of things you can do without having a Muk Jong. While having one is certainly good for training. There are many other wing chun skills to master before actually needing to use one.
However, If you’re training in wing chun, a dummy is a great way to get more practice and improve your skills. You’ll need to choose between a free-standing wooden dummy or a wall-mounted dummy. You can put your wooden dummy outside. Though you want to make sure to protect it from the elements. I keep my Muk Jongs inside but that’s just because I’d rather not deal with the weather.
Choosing a wing chun dummy
There are many factors to consider when choosing a wing chun dummies. First of all, the price is very important. Everyone wants to get a good deal, so you should make sure you shop around before you make a purchase. Also, look for sales and compare prices to find the best deal.
I will note here that there are really cheap versions of the wooden man and I don’t recommend them. They break too easily and what you would spend constantly repairing them you could have saved simply by getting yourself a decent one, to begin with.
You should also look for durability. While wood is the best option, be careful when choosing a dummy made of plastic or metal. While plastic dummies may be cheaper, they aren’t as stable. They may also make more noise. Look for a lifetime warranty as well, which covers major defects. (Although usually if you look for a used one you will get the best deal minus the warranty option.)
Choose a dummy that is suitable for your specific needs. Wing Chun dummies can vary in size and weight, so make sure to find one that fits your budget and physical requirements. There are many different kinds of dummies, and you can even get a customized one.
Lastly, choose one that mimics your body type and posture. Ideally, the dummy should have arms that resemble your shoulders and legs that resemble your knees and feet. This way, you can learn proper form and posture, and avoid injury. Also, wooden dummies are excellent for home workouts and gyms.
When selecting a dummy, make sure it’s the right size for the room where you’ll practice. You should also make sure that the dummy will fit you, as the dummy and you should be comfortable together. Purchasing the right dummy can help you get the most out of your practice.
One of the best features of a dummy is that it’s made from high-quality materials. Most of them are made from wood or metal. They’re lightweight and don’t require a lot of space for mounting. Because they are lightweight, you can easily transport them anywhere. They also come with complimentary striking pads.
Another feature to look for in a wing chun dummies is that they can be placed on the wall. Unlike ground-based dummies, modern dummies can be hung on the wall. The main advantage of a wall-mounted dummy is that it doesn’t need to be as tall as you are.
The arms of a wing chun dummies should be strong and durable. You can use hardwood to make the arms, but a mechanical lathe will make it easier to make the arms with smooth edges. The arms should measure around 56 centimeters long in total. These arms are then cut in two pieces of equal length. The dummy arms are then inserted into the wooden body.
Depending on the level of your practice, you might want to choose a wooden dummy with flexible arms. These dummies will not have the same feel as the more traditional wooden dummies, but they are still a great way to practice your skills.

When choosing a wall-mounted dummy, consider the type of training you want. For beginners, it is a good idea to choose a dummy that is in a fixed position and is made of quality materials. can I keep it outside?
Sifu Larry Rivera says
People have, I am sure it wouldn’t be a big deal. I would though try and keep it out of the elements directly.
Dean DelFico says
I purchased a woody dummy a few years ago. What is the right height for an adult, even a short adult? Is there differrent hieghts of the main piece?
Sifu Larry Rivera says
I want to say its different for everyone, however I would say the top arm should be about the height of your shoulder.
Pierre Fils says
I have been thinking about purchasing a wing Chung for years. I finally have the money and the time. I would Ike to know how long would it take to receive a dummy and how long is the life span.
Enter Shaolin says
Hey Pierre, depends on the type of wood and how well you take care of it. Cheaper jongs obviously won’t last as long and may be prone to breaking or splitting under consistent pressure. A good jong can last a lifetime. Both Sifu Phu and Sifu Larry have had their jongs for decades and they are still in great shape.
