Channeling Energy | Double Leg Takedown & Throw

October 17, 2022 By Sifu Larry Rivera 28 Comments

This story is an interesting one but it’s one that I am familiar with. I was asked to demonstrate channeling energy against a double leg takedown and then a throw. The gentleman doing the takedown and throw is an experienced wrestler.

He sprung the question on me what seemed like out of thin air so I certainly was not prepared for it. However, I am not one to turn the opportunity to practice with live energy. Especially against someone with many years of wrestling experience on top of his military training and background.

A Deeper Look At Channeling Energy

You hear us often talk about channeling energy. We talk about things like the C.O.P., T.O.E., B.A.B.E., etc. While I am not going to talk about those concepts directly in this article. It’s because of those concepts though I was able not to be taken down to the ground.

That does not mean, I am unwilling to go to the ground. It means that if I feel like I am going to the ground I am not going to resist it. Rather, I am going to conform to the energy and go with the flow. Too often I see people stiffen up which actually makes it easier to be taken down to the ground.

Go back to the video and notice how heavy Freddie is breathing. It’s because he is exerting a lot of energy to try to take me down.

You can also see when he tries and sweep me that I evade his sweep. I felt him try that by being connected to his body. So I moved when he moved.

Very impressive! I have seen a person with that level of skill go up against a wrestler, then power lifter, and judo master, all with same results you demonstrated.

    Thank you,

    Dan

    Hello,

I love the line from the “training tip”, it is
    a metaphore for life!
It´s great in a time where the internet is full self defense experts.
    Thank you!

Enjoyed it. Because of other videos, I can see the channeling through the arms as well as the rooting through the legs (up to a certain point).

Thank you, and I look forward to your in-depth explanation.

Also, it will be fun to see how much I saw correctly and how much I missed.

Thank you for doing all of this.
