Channeling Energy | Double Leg Takedown & Throw

October 17, 2022 By Sifu Larry Rivera 28 Comments

This story is an interesting one but it’s one that I am familiar with. I was asked to demonstrate channeling energy against a double leg takedown and then a throw. The gentleman doing the takedown and throw is an experienced wrestler.

He sprung the question on me what seemed like out of thin air so I certainly was not prepared for it. However, I am not one to turn the opportunity to practice with live energy. Especially against someone with many years of wrestling experience on top of his military training and background.

A Deeper Look At Channeling Energy

You hear us often talk about channeling energy. We talk about things like the C.O.P., T.O.E., B.A.B.E., etc. While I am not going to talk about those concepts directly in this article. It’s because of those concepts though I was able not to be taken down to the ground.

That does not mean, I am unwilling to go to the ground. It means that if I feel like I am going to the ground I am not going to resist it. Rather, I am going to conform to the energy and go with the flow. Too often I see people stiffen up which actually makes it easier to be taken down to the ground.

Go back to the video and notice how heavy Freddie is breathing. It’s because he is exerting a lot of energy to try to take me down.

You can also see when he tries and sweep me that I evade his sweep. I felt him try that by being connected to his body. So I moved when he moved.

These guys are no joke! I’ve trained with them years ago, and they were good then, so I’m sure they are better now.

“We’ll talk on Monday!” Love it!
NDN techniques look effortless or simple.
They are the periods at the ends of sentences.
I have attended at least two seminars and have studied videos since 2018. Sifu Larry, Sifu Phu, Sije Jamie are excellent teachers and demonstrators of NDN. They welcome martial arts practitioners and love sharing their knowledge. Highly recommend to anyone interested in effective martial arts.

Looks like you were sending the double leg energy back to left side of neck and your left was sending it to his right lower rib area. Good stuff

It looks like your base was not overly spread out! Were you channeling using ‘dead weight’ or just bringing his energy back on him?

There was a little dead weight being used in some spots. It was mostly sending his energy back to himself. If he would have barrelled in harder and gone lower I might have done more of a sprawling type of move. That’s what I “felt” at the moment I needed to do with my base.

When you get the 10 comments, I look forward to the breakdown. I thought of your video from CO where you talked about being able to feel the energy the your opponent, of were they were placing the energy, and then being able to quickly counter it before they could use their energy. Does the concept from that video apply here?

It can, what is difficult to teach in Internal Martial arts online is the understanding that what is being felt starts happening before the eyes or camera starts to pick it up. This is why we say all the time to everyone that they need to get to one of our seminars so that they can feel it.

It’s very difficult for the eyes to pick up what is going on, however, it’s very easy to feel what is happening.
